The first full Russian translation of the great Sanskrit poem “Valmiki-Ramayanam”

In 1995, I have received support from the Belarus-Soros Fund and was concentrated within one year exclusively on the research and first full Russian translation of the great Sanskrit mythological poem “Valmiki-Ramayanam”. The outcome was the prosaic translation of the first book (250 pages) of the poem and large introduction (100 pages), reflecting the history of the literary monument and its study during the last two centuries in India, Europe, America, Japan and Russia.

The work of commenting the text and preparation of an electronic lay-out for publication is now being in process. The translation of the second book has been begun.

Unfortunately, after the closing of the Belarusian Soros Foundation, the translation of other books is stopped and the first book already reviewed and prepared for publication ("Ramayana: Balakandam: the Book of Childhood") can not be published in our republic due to the absence of interest from the side of Universities or the Ministry of Education and appropriate financing. All this is the matter of the most deep regret and bewilderment. These books, containing a huge moral, poetic and scientific potential, opening new spiritual and historic-cultural perspectives, are unknown and inaccessible to our reading public, when they are the most deadly needed.
